Original cycling paintings produced by Paul Letchworth. Paul Letchworth’s current work captures the energy and excitement of the peloton and the spectacle of the Grand Tours. Drawing inspiration from live TV broadcasts and first-hand experience, Paul begins the painting process by investigating ways to interpret and decipher a realistic start point, which offers exciting disruptive possibilities through paint.

How we respond to our world through the screen, whether it be a fan holding high a camera at a live event or the live sporting event streamed into our front room, is the focus of his work. By using drone images, HD TV, recordings of live tv and YouTube on an iPhone, and GoPro, Paul explores ways to disrupt the images. Rewatching and rewinding cropping and editing of sources, overlaying and reworking all contribute to the ambiguity of movement, line and shape within his paintings. Mark Cavendish: The Final Sprint

This is one of a series of acrylic paintings that celebrates Mark Cavendish’s legendary career, culminating in his record-breaking 35th Tour de France stage win during Stage 5 of the 2024 race, riding for Astana Qazaqstan.
Inspired by live TV footage, Paul captures the explosive energy of sprint finishes—moments where riders jostle, converge, and blur into a mass of motion and determination. The riders’ forms jigsaw together in the chaos and speed of the race’s climax. Working from stills, his paintings evolve into dynamic abstractions, exploring the tension, speed, and fleeting chaos at the heart of elite cycling.Contact the artist direct here through the contact button on the website.

“In yellow” Oil on canvas 150 x 120cm £2960 Unframed and delivered to the UK

The Poetry of the Peloton

A peloton is the perfect mix of chaos and choreography—a living, breathing entity shaped by individual wills surrendering to a shared rhythm. Like a murmuration, it flows with quiet elegance: a seamless dance of colour and motion, riders drafting, conserving energy, and responding to invisible cues with instinctual precision.
These paintings draw inspiration from a range of race moments—grinding mountain climbs, high-speed team time trials, and pavement-level views that place the viewer directly in the heart of the action. Paul explores this dynamic world through gestural marks, layered colour, and interlocking forms.
